Vivian Maier: Street Photographer

I first read about Vivian Maier in January of 2011. A book of her work became available a couple months ago. The price is a bit high, but I will definitely be looking for it the next time I am in Powell’s. Here is the news story from last year:

update: Just found it at BN in Vancouver for $40, instead of the $100+ it is fetching on line right now.

Messing With What Ain’t Really Broken: My Tom Bihn Backpack

The Smart Alec from Tom Bihn has been my main bag for many years now. It is incredibly practical. I really like the look/feel of it, and use it all the time, in all weather conditions. My bag is still functional but is starting to show the wear and tear of the constant abuse I throw upon it. The current version Tom Bihn sells has been updated with a couple minor modifications from my earlier model, but it is essentially unchanged because it is close to perfect. It can carry a 17″ MBP with deceptive ease (with a vertical “brain cell”), and still has enough room to carry a camera body, a couple of lenses, and a change of clothes. The only issue with the bag in my opinion is that the main cavity of the bag is accessible only through the top. I want to convince them to put a DSLR or larger-sized hatch just past half-way down the back, with a removable internal nylon/foam partition to separate gear from top /bottom, I think it would make the best pack I’ve ever owned… more betterer?
